Description
AC archaeology undertook a brief review of the published historical maps for the site of a proposed Tourist Information Office on South Street, Bridport in June 2000. This comprised the consultation of Hutchins 1773 map of Bridport, plus the 1901, 1928 and 1999 Ordnance Survey maps. These revealed that the site comprised two burgage plots in the late 18th century, but had been amalgamated into one property by the 20th century. There were buildings on the street frontage until after 1952 and the site was cleared by 1980. The buildings on the frontage shown on the 18th century map appear to have been replaced during the 19th century.(1) (2)
