Description
In 1860 William Shipp excavated a well for the antiquary Charles Warne. The well was said to lie around 40 yards north of the Roman road. The well was about eight feet in diameter and excavations reached a depth of 60 to 70 feet without finding the bottom. The upper 10 to 12 feet was revetted with regularly laid blocks of chalk and green sandstone. The filling of the well was described as ashy and contained lots of coarse pottery, some Samian, nails and blocks of Kimmeridge shale.
