Description

Poole Museum undertook a small excavation at Pex Marine on the west side of Thames Street to investigate the reclamation sequence in relation to the Town Cellars and the stone wall containing a water-gate. The trench was 3.8m by 2.6m and was excavated by machine and the sections cleaned and recorded. At the base of the exposed sequence at a depth of about 2.8m was a layer of oyster shells, probably part of the same oyster midden found under the Town Cellars. Above this was a 1.25m thickness of sands and silts with oyster shell dated to the late 15th-early 16th century. Above this were a series of mortar, clay and rubble layers. (1)
