Description

A section through the Hamworthy-Badbury Roman road was excavated by Poole Museum in 1979, in advance of housing development. A 34m long trench, 2m wide was excavated by machine across the line of the road, which was visible as a low earthwork. The section revealed a turf bank 6.25m wide, widened to 12m before a gravel layer 6m wide was built on top. The original surface of the road did not survive. Only one period of road construction was evident from this section. (1) (2)
