Monument record MDO1064 - Roman town defences,Gallows Hill, Icen Way, Dorchester

Please read our .

Summary

Gallows Hill is close to the south-east corner of the Roman town defences. Observations by Terrain Archaeology during footpath improvements in 2019 revealed natural chalk over the whole area and no trace of the defences although the site was on the outer edge of the projected course of the bank. Bank material may have been removed as part of 18th-century landscaping to form the town walks.
