Full Description

The present Red Lion Inn stands at the rear of No.20 Market Place (for earlier site, see ST 80 NE 90). It has a dentil cornice as on the back elevation of the main building, and gauged brick window lintels as on the north front. The front wall, facing east, originally had in its south part a central doorway with two windows on each side; but the doorway was widened, the two southern windows were rebuilt, and one of the northern windows was obliterated in the 19th century, leaving only one original window intact. Of the five symmetrically disposed first-floor windows one is now blocked. A first-floor room contains a fireplace of about 1750. <2-3>
