Full Description

<1> Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1956, Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society for 1955, 146 (Serial). SDO55.

‘West Lane, Haydon: ST 66551540. Mr. Bean reports the discovery of late 1st and early 2nd century potsherds when a watercourse was cleaned out just south of West Lane, and suggests that there is now evidence of the existence of small settlements of the Roman period in the vicinity of the spring heads, although the country must then have been heavily wooded; and he adds that there is abundant evidence for superficial stone-quarrying, which may be of all ages, along the top of the high land south of Sherborne. Roofing slates of local stone are found extensively at the Old Castle, Sherborne, and at the Pinford Lane site.’
