Full Description
A cobbled courtyard behind Nos. 20 and 22 South Street to the former entrance to the tannery behind. It forms part of the substantial purpose-built premises combining industrial and domestic accommodation in the form of two houses with ranges to the rear at Nos. 20 and 22 South Street. The two houses have similar detailing but were built in two phases. No. 20 was built by Samuel Gundry in 1764-5, who was using No. 22 as a warehouse for his business as a tallowchandler at the time. There is a large three-storey wing to the rear of No. 20, which appears to have also been a warehouse. No. 20 appears to have been primarily domestic in function. (1)
