Summary

An 18th century house, refronted in the late 19th century and incorporating a late 19th century shop front. A two-storeyed 18th century stone extension and an early 19th century brick extension to rear. This was the premises of George Kenway, rope, twine and net manufacturer in the late 19th century.

Full Description

A brick house with slate roof, two storeys of probable 18th century date, with a new front put on in the late 19th century, incorporating a late 19th century shop front on the ground floor. Three sash windows on first floor and two attic dormers with casement windows and glazing bars. To the rear is a two-storeyed stone extension of probable 18th century date and an early 19th century brick extension.

George Kenway, manufacturer of rope, line, twine, shoethread and nets, had his premises at 42 South Street from about 1880-1898 (1) (2). An open ropewalk is shown behind the house on the 1890 Ordnance Survey Map (3).
