Summary

Church built 1858 to designs of G E Street, a north aisle was added in 1870 and the church further enlarged in 1928-31 by C M Oldrid Scott. It is a long low building of squared and coursed grey sandstone with brown ironstone banding. The projected tower and spire were never built.

Full Description

1857-8, G E Street, towerless, coursed Purbeck rubble, with voussoirs of ironstone to windows. South windows of nave 2-light plate and 3-light Geometrical tracery, gabled south porch. Double south transept, with arched triangular and 3-light intersecting windows. North-west bellcote, flush with north wall, had intersecting gables and foliage to coping. North aisle added 1870, 2-light Geometrical windows. Polygonal chancel apse, hip-roofed, with 2-light plate tracery windows over short gabled buttresses. North arcade of 4 bays, has round piers on waterleaf bases with foliage capitals, east respond with coupled columns of dark grey marble. Chancel arch also on coupled marble colums. Internal walls of nave and chancel of exposed rubble and ironstone as externally. Apse windows and 2 in south Wall of nave have inner arches, also banded and on marble colonnettes. Kingpost roof to nave, with canted rafters. Pulpit, square enclosure with marble colonnettes at corners. Font also square, on 5 columns with foliage capitals, with foliage sprays at corners. Much alteration in 1931: north transept, north chapel and western bay of north arcade added (simple plastered interiors ); flat-roofed vestry, extended in brick circa 1950. Western annexe 1966.
