Summary

Wesley Methodist Church built 1907 to designs of Lawson and Reynolds. Red brick and stone dressings in free Tudor style. Church Hall and Sunday Schools attached to rear. Demolished.

Full Description

1907, Lawson and Reynolds. Red brick and stone dressings in free Tudor. Symmetrical facade with cross-gables on each side over gallery staircases, each lit on road side by 8-light clerestory strip under eaves. Main gable flanked by sharp triangular projections of diagonally placed buttresses, through which main walls are threaded. Entrance under big triple-chamfered segmental arch, in recessed stone wall with windows; above it group of 5 3-light windows in shape of cross. Diagonally set finial on gable top. Body of church has 3 small cross-gables on each side with 2-light windows in 2 tiers. Polygonal cupola on ridge with leaded spirelet. Polygonal vestries adjoining polygonal hipped-roofed end to nave. Hall and Sunday Schools attached, with round-headed windows in 3 more cross-gables and lunette over narthex and link to church. (1)
