Full Description
Centred at SY 607947. An Iron Age/Romano British field system with pronounced field banks and lynchets on the north side of the valley. Above the 500 ft. contour the fields are mostly arable, and the system has been much reduced, though still visible on the ground, and in RAF air photographs CPE/UK 2431/4144-5.22 1 48. <1>
An Iron Age/Romano British field system is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs <2-5>. It consists of pronounced field banks and lynchets, particulartly pronounced on the north side of the valley. Above the valley the fields are mostly arable, and the system has been much reduced, though still visible as cropmarks in places. The remains have been further disturbed by numerous small quarries and chalk pits, now disused (MDO21265). A possible Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure (MDO21679 ) situated at the top of the valley slope just to the east of Notton Hill Barn is likely to be contemporary with the field system.
Additional banked linear features visible on current Lidar imagery on the north side of the field system are likely to be contemporary and were plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
