Summary

Built by London and South Western Railway in 1886 when the Wareham-Swanage branch was opened. The original Southampton and Dorchester Railway station had been further east, but was moved to the present site in 1864.

Full Description

Railway station on the Southampton and Dorchester line, opened in 1885-1886 when it replaced the original station of 1847 which was further east. The relocation of the station is thought to have been due to the opening of a branch line to Swanage. it is built of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a pitched tile roof. The platform shelters are taken on cast iron columns with ornamental cast iron spanderels; the shelters are weatherboarded and panelled; the benches on the up- platform are contemporary.
