Monument record MDO18063 - St George's Road prehistoric structure 01468

An arc of postholes defining a structure [01468] 6.5m in diameter found during excavations at St George's Road on the line of the Dorchester By-pass. No finds or contemporary surfaces were found.

Found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.

Structure [01468] was situated to the north of the similar structure [01467]. It consisted of a 6.5m diameter arc of eight postholes. The postholes were generally square in profile and spaced 1-1.5m apart. No contemporary surfaces or deposits survived and no finds were recovered. Posthole [01408] was cut by the curvilinear ditch [01010] of probable Roman date.
