Monument record MDO18186 - Maiden Castle First School (Prince of Wales First School): Late Iron Age Structure 515

An oval hollow or structure immediately east of roundhouse 513 within Late Iron Age Enclosure 1, exposed during the 1993 excavations at Maiden Castle First School undertaken by AC archaeology. Its precise function is unknown but it may have been an activity area or small structure serving the adjacent roundhouse.

The 1993 excavations undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School), revealed the remains of an oval or sub-circular area of infill lying to the east of roundhouse 513, within Late Iron Age enclosure 1.

Structure 515 was represented by an area of infill about 4.5m in diameter and its character is unclear but appears to have been a structure or hollow rather than a pit. Its spatial relationship to roundhouse 513 suggests that it might have been an activity area or a small structure serving the adjacent roundhouse. It was not excavated.

A similar structure [516] lay in the same relationship to roundhouse 514.
