Monument record MDO18189 - Maiden Castle First School (Prince of Wales First School): Late Iron Age Structure 518

A square structure formed by two parallel slots with posts at the terminals in the southwest corner of enclosure 1, was exposed during the 1993 excavations at Maiden Castle First School undertaken by AC archaeology. Its precise function is unknown but it may have been an above-ground store. It was stratigraphically later than the earlier phase of roundhouse 514, and may post-date it. It was not excavated.

The 1993 excavations undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School), revealed a square structure in the SW corner of the Late Iron Age enclosure 1.

Structure 517 was represented by two parallel slots with evidence for posts at the terminals forming a square setting about 2.5m across. Stratigraphically it post-dates only one phase of roundhouse 514, so may have been contemporary with the later phase of the roundhouse or may be later than it. It may be the remains of an above-ground store. It was not excavated and no dating material was recovered.
