Monument record MDO18260 - Wessex Court, Charles Street, Dorchester; Infant burial 1488

An infant burial was found to the north of the wall footing of Structure 1613 in Trench 4, during the 1989 excavations at Wessex Court, Charles Street, Dorchester. It may have been a foundation deposit within Building 1613.

Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1989 in the proposed Wessex Court retail development area between Charles Street, Acland Road, and South Walks, Dorchester (1) (2) (3) (4). The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the report and archive (1) (4).

Infant burial 1488 lay on the northern edge of Trench 4 and was only partly within the excavated area. The burial was of a neonate, but the posture and orientation have not been recorded. No grave cut was recognised. It lay within an occupation layer probably associated with Structure 1613.
