Full Description
A possible Late Roman mausoleum was found during observations by Christopher Sparey Green of the excavation of a soakaway pit associated with an extension to the Integrated Photomatrix building (1).
The evidence for Mausoleum R11 comprised a scatter of material including chalk rubble, limestone blocks, mortar and fragments of Ham stone. No walls or burials were observed in situ, but the range of material present was thought by Christopher Sparey Green to represent the remains of a previously disturbed stone-built mausoleum, which may have contained a Ham stone coffin (1). This mausoleum would have lain in the north western part of the main Late Roman cemetery.
