Full Description
An L-shaped Roman boundary ditch was found by AC archaeology during works at Dorchester Middle School, Coburg Road, Dorchester in 1998 (1) (2). This ditch was found running E-W across Trench 3, just to the south of the hengiform monument. It then turned northwards, just beyond the eastern limit of the henge. The ditch was V-shaped with a flattened base, measuring 1.5m wide and 0.4m deep. It was filled with brown silt.
It is possible that this ditch marks part of an enclosure, the remaining part being to the north and west of the excavated area . The position of this ditch in relation to the hengiform monument could suggest that the monument was still visible when the ditch was dug.
