Full Description

A brick-lined well was found in the northwest corner of Dorchester Prison during a watching brief in 1978. The well was about one metre in diameter and built from Broadmayne bricks. The well had been sealed by a large stone slab at a depth of about 1.4 m below ground level. The well was sealed beneath the wall of the Prison Governor's house garden, which was probably constructed in 1874, suggesting it had gone out of use by this date. (1)
