Full Description

'Many years' prior to 1901 'Two men were at work in the meadow formerly called Fordington Moor, east of Dorchester. The spot is about 200 yards north of the Blandford Road, nearly two thirds of the way to Grey's Bridge. Joseph Gawler, one of the men, told the writer that they found a multitude of Roman coins, not far beneath the surface. He said that a passer by, whose name is not remembered, carried off a 'hatful' of them. Further, Gawler said that he believed that more are still on the spot. He spoke of ashes being with or near the coins.' (1)
