Full Description
Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation in the Town Hall garden, High Street Christchurch, during 1981(site W7) in order to examine the High Street frontage. The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 105 (Davies 1983).
The excavation revealed several shallow post-holes and hollows, most of which produced small scraps of 17th-19th century material. No structures were immediately obvious although it is possible that [48, 100, 95 & 96] represent part of a building. Due to the nature of the site, the shallow overburden, post medieval activity and garden use, it is possible that the finds in the post-holes are intrusive and that they represent the truncated remnants of early features, possibly medieval.
