Summary

Excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976, revealed evidence for a possible timber structure adjacent to [S2]. This comprised two shallow slots [171 & 216], although two further slots [89 & 500] are on similar alignments and may also be associated in some way. Slots [171 & 89] cut the late 13th century building [S5].

Full Description

K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).

The excavations revealed evidence for a possible timber structure adjacent to [S2]. This comprised two shallow slots [171 & 216], although two further slots [89 & 500] are on similar alignments and may also be associated in some way. Slots [171 & 89] cut building [S5], suggesting at date not earlier than the late 13th century for this structure.
