Summary

An excavation on the site of the Dolphin development, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974-5, revealed a possible line of five late medieval post-holes averaging 0.3m deep and running perpendicular to Church Street. This may represent a plot boundary. Similar but less convincing alignments can also be identified in this area.

Full Description

M. Fox for Poole Museums, directed a rescue excavation in advance of the Dolphin development, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974-5 (site X11.3). The excavation was subsequently published in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).

The excavations revealed a possible line of five late medieval post-holes [F53, 61, 114, 121-2] averaging 0.3m deep and running perpendicular to Church Street. [F61] contained a late medieval sherd whilst [F114] produced a probable Saxo-Norman sherd and [15th century pit [F101]. This may represent a plot boundary. Similar but less convincing alignments can also be identified in this area.
