Summary

Part worked by 1901, but mostly by 1927. Quarried face has two sections showing drill and broaching, one above the other, drilled at 4 -inch centres (holes c.1½-2 ins diameter). Includes waste bank with some drilled and broached blocks; also a good group of scappled blocks. The quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s.

Full Description

Part worked by 1901, but mostly by 1927. (1-2) Quarried face has two sections showing drill and broaching, one above the other, drilled at 4 -inch centres (holes c.1½-2 ins diameter). Includes waste bank with some drilled and broached blocks; also a good group of scappled blocks. (3)

The coastal quarry, Sand Holes, described above (in 1-3) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the east of Lawnsheds. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 115 m by 80 m. (4) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (5) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
