Full Description
Found during excavations conducted by Wessex Archaeology during January 1997 in advance of a housing development (Knotts Paddock) south of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne. The results of the excavation have been published in PDNHAS, 121, 53-69 (1). Numbers in square brackets below refer to context numbers given in this report.
‘The in situ remains of a horse burial were excavated from a large (2.33 x 1.60m) cut [105] in the central area of the site. The single loose, slightly vacuous fill, 0.53m deep, contained fragments of clay pipe, shell, medieval (2 fragments/ 6g), 16th-18th century (7/20g) and modern (1/3g) pottery. The animal had been laid on its left side, head to the north-west.’ (1)
