Medieval strip lynchets on Buckham Down, Beaminster. They form part of a wider system of medieval strip fields and were digitally plotted from lidar imagery and aerial photographs during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

Three areas of medieval strip lynchets, centred ST 481-031, visible on air photographs.

Area A. ST 47850320. Pronounced but rather irregular, though approximately parallel strip lynchets. Grass and scrub covered.

Area B. ST 48100305. Pronounced parallel, closely-set strip lynchets, following the contours on the upper slopes of a steep hillside. Grass covered.

Area C. ST 48300312. Pronounced but rather irregular strip lynchets, covered in grass and scrub, with much rock exposed. <1>

A series of medieval strip lynchets are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery on Buckham Down <2-3>. They run roughly east-west from Mintern's Hill, Stintford Lane to Buckham Down Farm. They form part of a wider system of medieval strip fields and were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP
