Monument record MDO19863 - Land to the rear of Harper House, Hound Street, Sherborne; possible structure

Evidence for an east-west aligned wall was recovered from Trench 2 during an archaeological evaluation of land to the rear of Harper House in 2007. The wall is undated and is cut by an undated post-hole. It is possible that it relates to a large building visible on the 1802 copy of a 1733 town survey by J Ladd.

Context One Archaeological Services carried out an archaeological field evaluation on land to the rear of Harper House, Hound Street, Sherborne in 2007. The evaluation was by means of 5 machine cut trenches measuring 4m x 1m.

Trench 2, close to the eastern boundary of the site, contained a possible E-W aligned wall footing [205] approximately 1.3m from the northern end of the trench. The footings were cut into natural deposits and consisted of loosely and irregularly stacked platy sandstone fragments set at a 30 degree angle and approximately 0.35m wide. This was cut by an undated post-hole [203], circular in plan with concave sides and a sloping base measuring 0.54m in diameter and 0.2m deep [1].

It is possible that this wall relates to a large building visible on the 1802 copy of a 1733 town survey by J.Ladd.
