Full Description
Evidence for a building to the east of the east range of monastic buildings at Sherborne Abbey was recovered during excavations to the north of The Slype during 1974-6. The records of this excavation have been published in PDNHAS monograph 16 (1). Numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers in this publication.
This building is known from documentary evidence to have been built in 1697 and called the Box Building. The remains comprised two cellars at the southern end and a further cellar to the north separated by a large unexcavated baulk. The building measured approximately 13m N-S x 5m E-W and was demolished in 1855.
The south end of the building adjoined Bishop Roger’s chapel at the east end of the Abbey Church and was still so doing on a plan of buildings north of the church dated 1851. At this time it formed the eastern boundary of the Sherborne School Ball court (1).
