Full Description

Two, possibly three medieval pits and a gully were found during a watching brief to the rear of 42 South Street, Bridport, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 1999. These lay along the southern side of the site. The pits were oval or circular with rounded bases and contained a small quantity of medieval pottery. One pit (604) also had fragments of daub or possible loomweight fragments, which the excavator suggests is of Iron Age date. (1)

One other pit (502/622) in the eastern end of the site may also have been a medieval pit. It contained quantities of medieval pottery and ?daub/?loomweight fragments, but also 16th century and 18th century pottery in the upper part. It was suggested as being medieval by the excavator and perhaps the later pottery represents disturbance of the upper part of the pit. Alternatively, it may date to the post-medieval period and have residual medieval material within it. It also contained some residual ?prehistoric pottery. (1)

A narrow shallow linear feature 0.2-0.3m wide and 0.3m deep, aligned E-W, was found in the southwest part of the site. It contained a small quantity of medieval pottery and ?daub/?loomweight fragments. The function of this feature is uncertain.(1)
