Full Description
Sank following collision with the Greek barque Anthippe, Captain Collisasleas, Dunkirk to Newport in ballast, which later put into Cowes with damage to her stern and jibboom. The British Seaman sank immediately and nothing but her boat was saved

Reynold’s Newspaper – Sunday, 6/10/1878; Collision off Portland “A collision occurred on Thursday morning off the Bill of Portland, resulting in the loss of one of the vessel in collision. The Greek bark Antipi, from Dunkirk to Newport, in ballast, put into West Cowes, with damage to stem and loss of jibboom, and landed Captain Hesketh and the crew of the three-masted schooner British Seaman (of Preston), from Hull to Gibraltar, laden with coal, which vessel she was in collision with, when about twelve miles S.E. of Portland.” Southern Times: 12/10/1878 p.5; ‘Sank following a collision off Portland with the Greek barque Anthippe, Captain Collisasleas, Dunkirk to Newport in ballast, which later put into Cowes with damage to her stern and jib-boom.’ Also; Refs.
