Summary

Landing craft/vehicle/personnal carrier. The probable location of the 1984 wreck of small British personnel/vehicle landing ship, which foundered 3 miles NE of Handfast Point while under tow between Poole and the Solent when her bow-ramp opened causing her to flood. She may have been built during WWII as this type of vessel was commonly used in the D-Day landings.

Charted as LCVP 120, 'entire wreck' in the Marine zone. (1)

Vessel structure / Archaeological remains:

Lies in approximate position 50°39.63N, 001°50.78W in a general depth of 16m. (1)

She 'could not be found during extensive search using divers' which took place in 1985, and had not been located by 1993. (1)

Documentary evidence for the vessel:

'Sank while under tow when ramp dropped causing well deck to flood. Was on passage from Poole to Solent.' (1)

'A landing craft/vehicle/personnel which foundered whilst on passage under tow when her bow-ramp accidentally dropped open [and caused] the well deck to flood.' (2)

No further information about this particular vessel could be found but much can be conjectured from evidence available about this vessel type and this is recorded as 1521491.
