Full Description
A series of pits and/or postholes visible on aerial photographs taken during the excavation of Flagstones Neolithic enclosure (MDO20969) {1-2}. Some of the pits excavated were found to pre-date the enclosure. They contained material of mid 4th millennium BC date, including pottery, flints and animal bone. Some other pits which lay close to the line of the later enclosure, but again preceded it, have been suggested to represent the remnants of a stone setting. Some of the pits are likely to be associated with the Bronze Age activity which took place at this location, including the construction of a bowl barrow at the centre of the enclosure (MDO20970). It is possible some may also be late Iron Age in date, when a field system (MDO20972) and its associated settlement were established in the area {3}.
