Full Description
The remains of the footings of a building divided into two parts were found beneath the old fire station during a watching brief undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2003. The shallow footings comprised stone cobbles in a lime mortar matrix. (1) (2)
The footings are probably of a building shown on the 1841 Charmouth Tithe Map and on the 1888 Ordnance Survey 25-inch map. The building had been largely demolished before 1903 as only the western wall is depicted on the second edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (1).
The location of the building suggests it was likely to be outhouses or agricultural buildings, rather than a dwelling.
