Summary

Corn mill dated IG 1802 on a stone under the hoist, built of squared and coursed Portland stone with a slate roof. The author Thomas Hardy is said to have used this mill as the inspiration for Overcombe Mill in his novel 'The Trumpet Major'.

Full Description

The Mill, Church St, Upwey. A tablet on the front is inscribed "IG 1802". The mill retains its machinery with a single overshot iron wheel. <1-3>

Upwey Mill was built as a corn mill in 1802. Thomas Hardy used the mill as inspiration for Overcombe Mill in his 1805 novel 'The Trumpet Major'.
