Full Description
The base of a square cross remained in Newland at the time of Hutchins (c.1770). <1>
A court roll dated 1383-4 mentions that there was a cross at the centre of Newland where the bourough court was held in the open air. By the 17th century this cross had become a stone. Fowler <5> suggests that the cross may have existed prior to the creation of the borough on the site of St Swithin's fair ground. The borough opf Newland was created in 1227-8.
Cross [G.T.] Site of. The site of this ancient cross is situated in NEWLAND a short distance E of the top end of ST. SWITHIN'S ROAD. Supposed to have been erected in the 14th CENT. <3>
[ST 64141684] In NEWLAND there are the remains of a cross, in the form of a plain square base. <2> The position of the remains is shown 22.0 m. E of the OS 25" siting symbol] <1> between pp.74-5. Plan of SHERBORNE: appx. Scale 1/2500. 1802 2nd Edn.
The site of the cross is now covered by the modern road. The position shown in the 1802 25" plan has been accepted as most accurate. <6>
A plaque adjacent to this site bears the following inscription. "This stone marks the probable site of the cross at which the Borough Court of NEWLAND was held. This borough was created in AD 1227-28 by RICHARD le POOLE Bishop of SALISBURY". <7>
