Full Description
Old Pits shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1886 (OS 1886).
A loose grouping of nine pits are visible as ditched earthworks on the southwest side of Shillingstone Hill on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery RAF 1947; EA 2018). They are recorded as 'pits' on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map but the type is not specified. They could be post medieval chalk pits but a cluster of old gravel pits are recorded on the same map to the southwest, and it is possible these are alternatively gravel pits, although it is not unusual to find both types in close proximity, depending on the geology. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
