Summary

Rectory, now private house. Dated 1842 stone tablet over doorway: AS (Scott) MDCCCXLII on a stone shield with cusped framing. Greensand rubble and banded stone walls. Ham stone window-frames, and plinth moulding. Clay-tile roofs, stone gable-copings with moulded kneelers.

Full Description

"The rectorial house stands near the church … and is a large ancient building. In the windows are the arms of WADHAM WINDHAM etc". <1>

This house, formerly the Rectory, has been rebuilt except for the 17thc. N.E. wing. This is of two storeys with attics; the walls are of flint and stone in courses and the roofs are tiled. The wing has been partly reconstructed but retains some windows, each of two pointed lights. <3>

Maiden Newton House. originally built as a Rectory and considerably rebuilt about 120 years ago. It is no longer a Rectory <4.1>. Description in <3> correct. The stonework of the walls of the whole building has a weathered appearance and the house was probably rebuilt from some of the material of the former house. <4>
