Monument record MDO26869 - Second World War Type 25 pillbox, Kimmeridge

A World War II type 25 pillbox located on the western edge of Gaulter's Gap, Kimmeridge Beach, Kimmeridge. It was constructed in 1940-41 and is built of conglomerate concrete using horizontally placed corrugated iron sheets on a raft of concrete. The roof is of concrete laid on corrugated iron sheeting, which is still in situ. There is also evidence of iron sheeting laid around structure one inch under the external wall surface. A field visit in 1997 found the structure to be in a good condition.

A perfectly preserved type 25 pillbox now situated 15 feet from the eroding cliff edge. Constructed of conglomerate concrete using horizontally placed corrugated iron sheets on a raft of concrete. Entrance at rear is blocked with a sheet of plywood enabling the inside of the structure to be completely filled with stones from the beach. Dimensions:- entrance 26ins wide x 39ins high; walls 11ins thick; height of structure 7ft 3ins; concrete raft 9ins thick; 4 embrasures 9ins high x 12ins wide at front, tapering inside. Concrete roof laid on corrugated iron sheeting, which is still in situ. Evidence of iron sheeting laid around structure 1in under external wall surface.
