Full Description
<1> Edwards, R, Edwards, D, Gale, J and Yates, J, 1995, Church Mead, Toller Porcorum, Dorset: An Archaeological Assessment. (Unpublished document). SDO12582.
‘Excavations … Two linear, ‘V’-section ditches, up to 0.4m deep (fig. 6). Slag and ash were recovered from the N ditch but no datable artefacts from either. They were cut by the N-S boundary ditch and are probably earlier than c. AD 1200.
S of these was a curvilinear ‘V’-section ditch c. 0.7m deep. It contained no artefacts but was cut by the N-S ditch and pre-dated c. AD 1200.
… Excavations in the Post Office garden (once part of Church Mead and adjacent to the assessment site) have revealed a ditch which has been dated as Iron Age …. Pre-12th century, possibly late Iron Age or Romano-British features have been found within and close to the proposed development area. (Hunt 1990: 124; Gale 1991: 179). Occasional Romano-British potsherds have been recovered.’
