Full Description
Two Late Iron Age clay-lined pits were recorded during evaluations by Terrain Archaeology and excavations by Wessex Archaeology on the former James Brothers site, Blandford Road, Hamworthy between 2006-9.
They were found at the western end of Trench 2 cut into the natural. One was a shallow, oval scoop 0.73 m long by 0.56 m wide and 0.1 m deep, filled with a dark yellowish-brown sandy loam and contained a number of large lumps of burnt clay, some of which may have been in situ, indicating a possible lining to the feature. It contained a significant quantity of Late Iron Age pottery and briquetage. The other pit was only partially within the trench and had steep sides and a flat bottom. The sides were lined with a 90 mm thick clay lining and it was filled with dark yellowish-brown sandy loam containing relatively large quantities of briquetage and Late Iron Age pottery.
