Full Description

SZ 00829046: Excavations carried out north of St James' Church in 1973 produced pottery and food refuse dating from the 13th century until the 18th century. It is thought, due to the close proximity to the church, that this site may represent a priests' house or oratory. <1>

Excavations by Poole Museum to the north of St James's Close revealed evidence for medieval occupation in the form of a pit containing 13th-14th century pottery and animal bone, a pit or hearth containing burnt clay and charcoal and a possible post hole. These features were sealed by a clay layer containing 13th-14th century pottery and some intrusive 18th century pottery. <2>
