Full Description

Rescue excavations by Poole Museum on the Old Orchard Car Park site in 1973 revealed the foundations of a late 15th or 16th century building on the site of 23 Castle Street, Poole. The remains suggest that the building was of more than one phase of construction and a variety of construction materials were used for the footings and walls. To the southeast the footings comprised coarsely dressed chalk and limestone rubble. Further to the northwest, the footings were of chalk with limestone ashlar above. Two walls of limestone ashlar may be later insertions of 16th or 17th century date and could relate to moving the line of the street frontage backwards. (1)

This building must have been demolished before 23 Castle Street was built in the late 17th or early 18th century. (1) (2)
