Full Description
Second World War anti-tank blocks are visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s across the end of Bournemouth Pier and the roads to the east and west. Two parallel lines of blocks extend across the end of the pier. A single line of anti-tank blocks extends in an L-shape along the western side of Pier Approach. Two parallel lines of blocks extend south west to north east across the road leading to the east from Pier Approach. Four blocks are located approximately 13 m to the east of this double line. Four larger blocks are visible within the western lines of defences, possibly a different type of anti-tank block or other military anti-invasion structure. (1-2) Anti-tank blocks, made of reinforced concrete, were one of the coastal crust defence measures used to protect vulnerable areas during the Second World War. The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (3) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
