Monument record MDO28610 - Second World War slit trench, Southbourne, Bournemouth

A probable Second World War slit trench is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s at the northern edge of Southbourne Coast Road. The trench is oriented east-west, measures 11 m in length, and is flanked by banks of spoil. Slit trenches were excavated to protect troops from defensive fire. The trench may have been excavated for practise purposes. (1) The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (2) An area of possible anti-tank ditches are located immediately to the south west (see MDO28609). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
