Full Description
A large circular pit, approximately 28.6m in diameter, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Arne Heath taken in 1947 (1). Its size suggests it is probably the remains of a medieval or later extractive pit. Alternatively it could be the site of a bomb crater associated with Second World War activities in this area. This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). It is not visible on the most recent comprehensive imagery available to the project (2), the area now being under forestry plantation.
