Monument record MDO29982 - Roman pit found on west side of Dorchester Prison

A pit thought possibly to be Roman in date was found on the western perimeter of Dorchester Prison in 1978. It was circular, filled with dark humic soil, and contained Roman material. However, the nature of the fill could suggest it is of more recent date.

A pit (Pit 2) was discovered during a watching brief along the western perimeter of Dorchester Prison in 1978. The pit was circular, measuring 1.6 m in diameter and 0.6 m deep. It was only partially exposed. The fill was largely dark humic soil, similar to topsoil. It only contained Roman finds, but the nature of the fill could indicate that it was a much more recent feature. (1)
