Full Description

An area of extractive pits, which may date to between the later prehistoric and medieval periods, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of 1997 to the west of Tolpuddle. The pits are located on Portsdown Chalk Formation and are visible over an area measuring approximately 350 m by 80 m. They measure between 2 by 2 m and 28 m by 20 m. (1-2) The pits are located within a possible later prehistoric settlement area (see MDO30640) and may be associated with it. It is difficult to tell whether they pre- or post-date the settlement. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
