Full Description
A post medieval chalk pit it marked on the First Edition OS map <1>, located on the southern side of Ailwood Down, Corfe Castle. A pit is visible as an earthwork at this location on aerial photographs <2>. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

‘A chalk pit cut into the south side of the chalk ridge at the base of a steep slope lies north-west of Ailwood Down. The 1891 6” to one mile map indicates that it was in use at that time. It is approximately 50m in diameter.’
