Summary

Site of a possible Bronze Age bowl barrow. Recorded by field investigators as an extant double mound. Also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs.

Full Description

Round barrows on Shorn Hill. A bell, a double bowl and a bowl lie in a close-packed North-South straight line on top of a broad spur about 500 yds North of Bronkham Hill.

'B' Double bowl (62998724) immediately adjacent on North of 'A' (MDO3175). Elongated and hour-glass shaped, with North part 58 ft in diam and 6 ft high and South part 51 ft in diam and 5 1/2 ft high. North end cut into by a pond. <1> <3>

'B'. SY 62988724. Double bowl barrow, with the two mounds linked by a low ridge. The north mound is 20.0m. In diameter and 2.4m. High, cut into on its north side by a pond; the south mound 16.0m. In diameter and 1.8m. High. No visible ditch. All the barrows are grass-covered. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4>

Site of a possible Bronze Age bowl barrow on Shorn Hill, one of a group of three barrows situated in this area (MDO3175-7), lieing in a close-packed North-South straight line on top of a broad spur about 500 yds North of Bronkham Hill.

Later field investigations record it as two mounds linked by a low ridge. The north mound is 20.0m. In diameter and 2.4m. High, cut into on its north side by a pond; the south mound 16.0m. In diameter and 1.8m. High. No visible ditch. <5>

Also visible as an earthwork mound on aerial photographs <6-9>, measuring approximately 20 metres in diameter. This site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

The N mound is 20.0m in diameter and 2.4m high. The other mound is 16.0m in diameter and 1.8m high. The two mounds are situated in a field that is rarely ploughed and is under closely grazed grass. 1/2/A
